The
4 main areas that need attention when discussing
security are:
SPAM
VIRUSES
ENCRYPTION
FIREWALLS
We could fill a dozen pages with detail
about types of firewall and
anti-spam measures but instead it might be
better to mention briefly what
they are, how to protect against them and
then provide some links to useful
areas if you want more detail.
SPAM
Spam
(unsolicited emails) is the scourge of
modern email communication and
it is estimated that over 40% of all emails
sent can be categorised as spam.
Although sending Spam to individuals became
illegal on December 12th 2003 it
is still anticipated that businesses will
continue to have a daily battle
with Spam. Skymarket has been reviewing the
anti-spam market and will be
making a recommendation in the coming weeks
as to what we feel is the best
available product. See
here for
more detail on Skymarket's own internal measures.
VIRUSES
New
viruses are being written all the time
and there are thousands
circulating the world at once. A good rule
of thumb is to never open an
attachment on an email that looks unusual
in any way (maybe a double suffix,
eg .tsr.xe) and never open an email from
someone you don't know. Details on
Skymarket's anti-virus measures can be seen
here
ENCRYPTION
Encryption
is an industry standard process for securing
data against hackers
and unauthorised users and contrary to what
you may have read over the
years, current encryption standards are well
beyond the point they need to
be to be secure. Secure webspace or secure
certificates can be bought from
Skymarket to secure your data or your website
prior to an ecommerce venture
and the details can be found here
FIREWALLS
A
Firewall is a method of protecting your
website or server from external
attack by computer hackers. There are many
different types of Firewall and
large corporate companies sometimes spend
hundreds of thousands of pounds
for state-of-the-art protection. Skymarket's
servers are protected in this
way and customers can request Firewall protection
if they feel their site
may be under threat. See
here for
